Skoda

Skoda is a Czech automobile manufacturer founded in 1895 as Laurin & Klement. Headquartered in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. In 1925 Laurin & Klement was acquired by Skoda Works. Which itself became state owned in 1948. Until 1990, Skoda was still making its range of rear engine outdated small family cars. Although it had started production of the Favorit front-wheel drive hatchback in 1987 as an eventual replacement.

The fall of communism brought great changes to Czechoslovakia. Most industries were subject to privatization. In the case of Skoda, the state  brought in a strong foreign partner. The tender for privatization was announced in 1990. After 1991 it has been privatized to the German Volkswagen Group. In 1994 became its subsidiary and in 2000 a fully owned subsidiary.

Skoda automobiles are sold in over 100 countries. In 2018, total global sales reached 1.25 million units. The operating profit was €1.6 billion in 2017. As of 2017, Skoda’s profit margin was the second highest of all Volkswagen brands.
