First generation (E12 1972–1981)
The E12 is the first generation of 5 Series, and was manufactured for model years 1972-1981. It replaced the “New Class” sedans. It was produced in the sedan body style. The first models were powered by 4 cylinder engines, with a 6 cylinder engine introduced a year later.
